How to Become Pain Free
Do you regularly wake up feeling stiff as you slide out of bed in the mornings? Do your joints flare up for no reason – some days they are ok but others they’re much worse?
Understanding that some foods are inflammatory to the human body is the first step in recognising how diet and nutrition can really help you to become pain-free.
The latest figures are shocking. The NHS is in crisis and there is an epidemic of obesity related Diabetes. The NHS spends £192 million per week helping people with the condition. There are more than 700 people each day diagnosed with diabetes which is the equivalent of one person every 2 minutes. In the last 10 years the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has doubled from 1.4 million to 3.5 million. By 2025, the estimated number of people with this condition is 5 million. However, there are approximately ½ million that are undiagnosed.
Here’s a little bit about pain and inflammation…
Inflammation is the body’s initial healing response to trauma from an invader, such as infection or injury, which damages tissues. For example catching a cold causes inflammation in the throat and spraining an ankle causes inflammation in the ankle joint leading to swelling and redness.
We know that these will heal given time and support, however, when inflammation becomes chronic and continues for weeks, months or even years then we see a different health picture altogether and the development of chronic health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel conditions, diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis and many others.
So how does diet fit in? As a nutritionist, I see clients with inflammatory conditions every single day and I recommend a healthy, clean diet in order to reduce the inflammatory processes. Inflammation speeds up aging too and in conjunction with stress and poor lifestyle choices can trigger those autoimmune conditions. There are certain foods that can trigger inflammatory responses due to the components in those foods. If you or a member of your family are suffering from any kind of inflammatory disease even obesity, high cholesterol, depression, allergies and IBS are ‘inflammatory’ in nature and can be supported using an anti-inflammatory approach.
